江戸時代末期、幕末に肥後細川家のお抱え金工になった熊谷一派が、江戸四谷に住んでいたことから「江戸肥後」「四谷肥後」などとも呼ばれています。
本来の肥後は侘びの心がありますが、江戸肥後にはそれが強くは感じられないので、区別して語られることが多いです。

"In the late Edo period, during the Bakumatsu era, the Kumagai school, which became the official metalworkers for the Higo Hosokawa clan,
lived in Yotsuya, Edo. Hence, they were also referred to as "Edo Higo" or "Yotsuya Higo".
While the original Higo style embodies the spirit of 'wabi' (a Japanese aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection),
this essence is not as strongly felt in the Edo Higo style, leading to them often being discussed and differentiated."
